Illustrations of the Past

Ebby Port x Samuel Zeller

Reminiscing her childhood, designer Ebby Port created collection ‘It’s Night Now’ as a reflection of her heritage. Examining the past, photographer Samuel Zeller’s ongoing Botanical series revolves on a painterly recreation of mid-century botanical illustrations.

Re-collecting memories of her childhood wardrobe, Ebby Port embeds reminiscing details into the collection. Hand drawn flowers are printed on the garments. Childlike collar is designed over the bust, as she always wore collars over sweaters as a child. Big t-shirt like sleeves and the patchwork bikini top resemble a childlike drawing. The bows in the sleeves and big silhouettes give further playfulness to the collection. Coming back to the theme of heritage, the designer experimented with bleach ink that decolorize the fabric. The fading fabrics represent the lost memories stored in the attic.

In his ongoing series ‘Botanical’, Swiss photographer Samuel Zeller presents a modern photographic take on classical botanical illustrations produced between the 18th century and early 20th century. He explores the refracted reality caught in the greenhouse’s translucent glass, photographically preserving these glimpses of nature. Building up on his past career as a designer, he tries to bring compositions and colors reminiscent of painting and graphic design in his work. His motto is finding beauty in the seemingly less interesting subjects. The colors in the series are subtle and sophisticated as the photographer’s attempt to render a painting. Impressionist artists (mostly Gustave Caillebotte, Auguste Renoir and Monet) have inspired the series, and the way they had depicted intangible subjects such as light and reflections. A hidden reference to Japonism can also be found in the work, particularly in the way that depth and perspective are removed.
